This spectacular contemporary family house renovation by Furman + Keil Architects is located in the neighborhood of Tarrytown in Austin, Texas. The owners requested that their reimagined home provide a warm and inviting atmosphere that is quiet and unassuming, hearty, and comfortable.
The provenance and sturdiness of the existing house made it worthy of preserving, but the old house lacked a connection to the beautiful oaks and creek surrounding the secluded property.

The primary design concept was to create a cozy environment for the family to gather in close connection to the outdoors. This was best achieved in the new heart of the house, a large eat-in kitchen and sitting room with oversized windows that open to an oak-shaded yard that spills down to the creek.
Materials were selected for their unassuming timelessness and ability to weather gracefully – oxidized wood, local brick, steel, and stone. Deep eaves help to shelter the dwelling from the elements. The house was also updated with improved energy performance measures, designed to last for generations.
What We Love: This house renovation project transforms an older residence in Texas into a warm and inviting family home that will be enjoyed for years to come. Stylish furnishings and accessories bring personality into the living spaces. Each space was thoughtfully designed to reflect the needs of its inhabitants. We are especially loving the grand staircase in the entry of this home and the wonderful connection between indoors and out.
