A rustic lakeside cabin provides a serene forested escape in Minnesota

Rehkamp Larson Architects has completely transformed a family getaway home, turning it into a serene sleepaway cabin along the shores of a lake near Walker, Minnesota. The new owners of this former camp property (with existing old structures) had a vision: to create a central gathering place that seamlessly blended with the natural surroundings.
After exploring various design options, the project team decided to focus on the camp’s main cabin structure. Its prime location near the lake and the presence of a grand old stone fireplace made it the perfect choice. The original structure was stripped down to its foundation and then meticulously reimagined. The result is a cabin designed around the original lodge’s fireplace, featuring crossing timber vaulted ceilings and expansive windows that frame the picturesque lake view.

The spacious screen porch provides a year-round family gathering spot, with windows that allow for screen or glass, depending on the season. The finished result is a new/old cabin that draws on fresh Scandinavian design influences, timber frame structure, and playful use of color to create a central hub for the next generation at this family camp.

The cabin mixes rustic and contemporary elements that seamlessly blend the re-imagined cabin with the original cabin space and new two-story addition. The rehabilitated cabin encompasses a living room, dining room, kitchen, and screened porch. The sleeping quarters are tucked into the other living spaces. The rebuilt cabin features three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, and just over 3,000 square feet of living space. An abundance of space to accommodate family and friends now and in the future.

What We Love: This serene rustic cabin in Minnesota blends historical and modern elements for a clean and timeless aesthetic. Some of the furnishings date back to the camp, such as the dining room table, and table in the hallway — a wonderful way to preserve the history of this beloved summer camp. The beautiful melding of past and present, old and new, creates a warm and inviting family summer retreat to enjoy for years to come.

It’s beautiful! But with the winter weather up here it is going to be costly to heat with all those windows.
