Sheldon Pennoyer Architects in collaboration with Kristina Crestin Design has designed this idyllic New England modern farmhouse located in Essex, Massachusetts. This project focuses on delivering a clean, fresh, modern farmhouse interior. Crisp white, toasty oak beams and hints of blue and grassy greens are key elements, melding with typical farmhouse elements like barn doors, soapstone and reclaimed wood.
This newly constructed family home offers 3,500 square feet of living space, a conservation easement limited the size of the structure. The building is a high-performance envelope and a registered ENERGY STAR project, both of which delighted the homeowner who wished to go in a sustainable direction.

Natural materials —real wood and stone, clean colors, and airy spaces combine to create this quaint oasis. The flooring is white oak, offering warmth and durability and attributes of being clean and rustic. Tall ceilings helps to lend a feeling of spaciousness. To infuse that farmhouse feel, the designer added chamber-fumed white oak beams to the mudroom hall and main living area.
What We Love: Step inside this serene dwelling to find a beautiful nature-inspired color palette complimented by bright and airy living spaces. Our favorite elements in this New England modern farmhouse is the bold laundry room cabinet color and the folk-art quilt-inspired main bathroom floor tile. Overall, this is an idyllic family home that will surely be enjoyed for years to come!

In some parts of the main living area, beams were used to delineate shiplap walls, painted in Super White PM-1 | Benjamin Moore. This hue is used throughout, adding a neutral brightness to the interiors.

The mudroom hall barn lights and built-in cabinetry in the laundry room are painted in Moss Landing 410D-6 | Behr Paint.
First floor spaces, such as the mudroom, laundry room and bathroom pay homage to the farmhouse style, minus the shiplap and dark beams. Instead, the designer incorporated her love of salvage and the idea of repurposing — by integrating reclaimed wood for a bench and countertop and a soapstone sink — all sourced from The Old House Parts Company, Kennebunk, ME.
