SKD Architects in collaboration with Hendel Homes designed this organic modern home nestled on a large and hilly wooded property in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This home fulfills the owner’s dream for an atmosphere of casual living. Guiding the inspiration for the design of this project, a contemporary interpretation of a mountain rustic home. With three active children beginning to approach their young teens, their dream home centers around the family and their active lifestyle.
Soaring ceilings in the main living spaces and the desire to bring the outside in through the extensive use of glass nourish your senses. Although large, 9,000 square feet to be exact, this home gracefully tucks into this bowl-shaped site with mature trees wrapping as a backdrop at its highpoint. Grade slopes steeply from the street up to the rear, challenging a walkout, but allowing for main level outdoor living at grade.
The four-car garage, set up for electric vehicles and a large sports court are less integrated into the hillside to reduce the massiveness. Knowing this organic modern home would be large, the architects built an efficient building envelope. The site opens to the south and southwest supporting the use of photovoltaics. Although not felt, the slope and trees limited the actual building area.
What We Love: This organic modern home features an open and spacious layout that is idyllic for family living. Although this home is quite large, the project team did a fantastic job of making living space feel warm and cozy, with the use of materials, furniture placement and room dividers. We are especially loving the inviting screened-porch with the comfortable furnishings and amazing fire table!
