mountain-home-rustic-exterior

This organic modern mountain home was designed by Living Stone Design + Build, in collaboration with ID.ology Interiors & Design, located in Asheville, North Carolina. The home is surrounded by woods and perched on a high spot where the owners can enjoy peaceful mountain vistas. The exterior and interior architectural design of this home offers a sophisticated aesthetic, mixed with a rustic material palette of wood and stone.

When designing this home, the project team focused on creating clean, symmetrical lines while highlighting the beauty that surrounds this property. The homeowners have three children, two of which are in college. They both work from home but planned to retire early and this would be their forever home โ€” so thoughtful planning in every aspect of the design was very important.

Additional Details: There is 4,000 square feet of living space, with no dining room. There is a sofa table with a drop leaf for formal dining when needed. There are three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, along with a workout room and workshop.

Interesting Fact: This modern mountain home was constructed with energy-efficiency in mind. It has a silver certification from The Green Built Alliance, a non-profit organization in North Carolina that advances sustainability in the built environment with education, measurable standards and regional action.

What We Love: This modern mountain home is the perfect example of how much warmth, character and interest a little ‘rustic’ can add to a more contemporary decor. Sophisticated yet comfortable, the decor selections work beautifully with the architecture of the home. The large windows allow for sweeping views and the interior colors do not compete with the gorgeous greens and browns of nature. Overall a gorgeous mix of sophistication and earthiness โ€” love it!

The drop-leaf, when extended open, can accomodate up to 12 dinner guests. There is no formal dining room in this home, instead the homeowners use their cozy booth, dine in front of the television or take their plates out to the porch!

Above: The dimensions of this kitchen are 19 x 14-feet, for a total of 266 square feet of living space. The island molded walnut counter stools were sourced from Brooklyn, New York-based furniture retailer Organic Modernism. The beautiful pendant lights are from Lamps Plus. The wall and cabinet paint color is Extra White SW 7006, Sherwin-Williams; while the booth paint color is Peppercorn SW 7674, Sherwin-Williams.

Above: To save some money in the design, the homeowner’s would have spent $12,000 for two custom garage doors. Instead, the builders integrated ready-made doors from Clopay and trimmed them out with wood slats. This created a custom look for a fraction of the cost โ€” about $5,000.
