Amanda Martocchio Architecture was commissioned to design this efficient modern home located in Greenwich, a town in southwestern Fairfield County, Connecticut. A couple of empty-nesters purchased a 1960s ranch house, reimagining it into an innovative, luminous and energy-efficient modern home for them to retire.
The homeowners were looking for a pared-down lifestyle. One where they could inhabit a single level, informally entertain and experience an indoor-outdoor connection to the wooded and rocky environment outside. The original foundation was preserved as much as possible and includes a small addition, a reconfigured floor plan, and newly envisioned massing.

In addition to an open, bright, comfortable home with warm, beautifully crafted materials, the homeowners also wanted their rebuild to be environmentally sensitive, reusing the original foundation to the extent possible, and incorporating sustainable best practices.
The design solution is simple, elegant, and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows along the rear, connecting interior living spaces to the outdoor environment. Overhangs and clerestories were incorporated to ensure that spaces throughout the dwelling would be luminous and comfortable, which helped garner LEED certification.
The owners were committed to creating an elegant, cohesive home that embraces the less is more approach with a strong connection to the outdoors. This 4,024-square-foot home has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and one half-bathroom.
A carefully curated collection of contemporary artwork and finely crafted furnishings infuse the home with richness and delight.
The design process was informed by building science best practices, including solar orientation, floor-to-ceiling triple-paned windows, rain-screen exterior cladding, and a thermal envelope that far exceeds code requirements.
What We Love: This efficient modern home offers a reconfigured interior layout that is open, spacious, and full of natural light. The exterior massing has a newly envisioned designed that is sleek and attractive, offering new life to the originally dated residence that existed on the site. We are especially admiring the clean aesthetics of the living room, with its comfortable furnishings, fireplace wall, and indoor-outdoor connection.
