Designed to adapt to the needs of a family of four, this contemporary townhouse in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York was renovated by Ensemble Architecture. The 25 foot wide interiors are spread out over three levels, retrofitted to accommodate a family with an active lifestyle. The rehabilitation of this home was extensive, the architects replaced out all of the flooring, walls, ceilings, windows and staircase. A focal point to the parlor level is a custom designed steel riser with solid wood treads, which acts as a separation of the living room on one side with the dining and kitchen area on the other. The dining/kitchen space features three glass doors that leads out to the rear of the property where a spacious patio extends the interior living spaces to the outdoors. This provides convenient access off the kitchen to bring food outside for easy entertaining and al fresco dining.
Also on this level, this existing wood ceiling joists were left exposed, adding an industrial element to the space. Insulation was added to the underside of the flooring above to help improve energy efficiency. Adding to the beauty of this contemporary townhouse, reclaimed flooring was installed throughout the main living spaces, helping to compliment the exposed ceiling joists while adding to the rustic aesthetic of this urban dwelling.

What We Love: This townhouse features a nice blending of industrial, rustic and contemporary creating a low-maintenance, clean-lined family home that is ultra-sleek. Open and loft-like feel is very ideal and the central staircase creates a dramatic focal point that is very drool worthy. As a whole, this renovation is open, airy and luminous, as a result, it is very visually appealing… what do you think?
