Modern loft creates trendy vibe in downtown Toronto

Loft 002 is a modern, minimal, one-bedroom loft in Toronto, Canada with wall-to-wall views of the trendy King West area down below, designed by Rad Design Inc. The architect’s brief was to add some of that “trendy” King West vibe into this small scale apartment and with not much floor space to accomplish the client’s design aesthetic, their approach was to select pieces that where necessary to day to day living while at the same time adding in the coveted “Wow” factor. The color palette was kept mostly neutral, allowing the odd pop of colour to bring in some of that “Wow” in a restful none cluttered manner. Carefully selecting statement pieces helped accomplished the task and the retro Dear Ingo chandelier hovering over a classic living room set up that includes a pair of Barcelona chairs was the perfect starting point. Adding to the power of the room is an abstract canvas of amber and grey tones while in the distance a bright fuchsia rug peeks out from the bedroom.

From bathroom to bedroom and kitchen to living, Rad Design has maximized the small loft space by choosing design elements that create a trendy impact without imposing or overpowering.

The conversation area is small and right next to it is the kitchen bar which doubles as the dining zone, the island has a waterfall edge on one side and is clad in white lacquer. The bar stools are in close proximity to the couch and for that reason a white finish was selected so that they would not visually intrude on the conversation area. The bright white used extensively throughout the social zone is a crisp contrast to the rough texture of the concrete ceiling and columns and the walnut cabinetry and ebony flooring brings in a layer of warmth.

While the homeowner is preparing meals on the island’s counter, he/she can enjoy the panoramic Toronto skyline.

Helping to add size to the loft, a bright and colorful fabric art piece hangs above a small table a short distance away. This creates depth to the space by drawing the eye past the island. Had the color been on the island or on the bar stools, the space would have felt more confined.

The kitchen is a functional space with the stove, sink and dishwasher located on the wall of cabinets, while the island is a large uninterrupted counter perfect for prepping meals. With only room for one person within the kitchen zone, helpers can work via the bar side of the island.

Next to the living area a sliding door of frosted glass panels leads to the bedroom. To create a dynamic vibe to the room without taking up any square footage, the designers brought in a bright fuchsia area rug offset by dusky lavender bed linens and a blue grey headboard wall. A fun chandelier of large bubbles floats above creating a whimsical contrast to the exposed ducting and concrete ceilings.

The mirrored night stand with suitcase detailing continues the whimsical touches to this private space.

The bathroom is an almost symmetrical space wit tub on one side and 48″ shower stall on the other. The whimsy in this room is via the vanity with its hand pulls completely offset for a chopped off look. It almost appears like someone has cut the cupboard in half to make it fit.

Both the tub and the shower are wrapped in 4″x24″ chocolate brown tiles laid subway fashion, and the shower continues with a chocolate brown mosaic in its basin. The tones are similar to the wood veneer on the vanity and with no other colors but the white walls, floor, and sink – the room stays feeling open and bright. The openness is further emphasized by the frameless fixed glass panel in the shower.
