See this absolutely amazing midcentury retreat in Sonoma wine country

midcentury-living-room

This midcentury family retreat was completely transformed by Andrew Mann Architecture, nestled on 5-acres of vineyards, gardens, and orchards in Sonoma County, California. The project team collaborated to create a place where a busy family of six could spend quality time together cooking, eating, swimming, gardening, and drinking wine.

Inspired by the family’s desire for a life unplugged, the architect reimagined this classic midcentury-style dwelling. Some of the design features of this structure had aged gracefully, including the iconic sawtooth profile, the voluminous shed-style roof, and tongue-and-groove wood ceilings. Other details needed a makeover, such as the cramped and isolated kitchen, and a mustard-hued master bath.

Above: The kitchen was completely reconfigured from a u-shaped layout by removing the dividing wall from the living and dining rooms. The Statuary honed Calacatta marble countertops and backsplash provide a bright and airy feel. Craftsman-style cabinetry was replaced with clean-lined, flat-panel cabinetry in contrasting bright white and smoky gray.

Outdoor living is the quintessential California lifestyle. The project team kept this in focus when designing this outdoor kitchen pavilion. Emerging from the curvaceous garden beds, the sloped roof shed shelters a wood-burning pizza oven, a full counter setup, and an extended table for large family gatherings.

Along with the herbs and vegetables, the garden beds are brimming with roses, snapdragons, gladiola, cosmos, and a variety of other blooms.

The highlight of the lush gardens is the veggie garden that frames the outdoor dining pavilion. This fantastic entertaining space comes complete with ceiling-mounted heaters and misters to be enjoyed throughout the seasons. The family spends most of their time gathering in this outdoor oasis, which also includes a swimming pool.

The family worked with the landscape architect to create an interactive outdoor space where the kids could explore. They recently decided to increase the size of the strawberry beds for their youngest son who has begun walking and enjoys picking berries.

A trellis wraps the shed roof, providing additional shade to this outdoor pavilion. The dining table offers plenty of seating for family and friends, with Caprice Chairs in red from Room & Board. The structure also features an alfresco kitchen and dual sliding barn doors that open to reveal a spacious pantry.

A wood-fired pizza oven was a special request for this family who loves to cook and entertain. Every weekend the family picks vegetables from the garden as toppings for their pizza that they make from scratch.
