This rustic modern home in Minnesota boasts impressive design details

Rehkamp Larson Architects in collaboration with Hagstrom Builder has designed this rustic modern home, nestled on 90-acres of prairie land in Independence, Minnesota. This family-friendly dwelling was designed to maximize views of the surrounding countryside. The architects achieved this with a splayed floorpan that allows for long views while merging indoor-outdoor living spaces.

This home’s layout has been organized into crossing wings, with the main level encompassing the public zones — kitchen, dining room, family room and porch, in addition to the support spaces of the mudroom, wine cellar, and dog room. The master bedroom suite, which is also on the main level, features a private staircase that connects to the children’s bedrooms above. A bridge connects the children’s bedrooms to the other wings of this dwelling, which includes guest bedroom suites and a loft with built-in bunks.

The dwelling beautifully mixes rough, salvaged materials with clean, modern elements. Weathered hardwood on both exterior siding and interior walls contrast against exposed concrete floors, providing warmth and durability. Copious amounts of glass help to flood the interiors with natural light while providing incredible views of the property.

Exposed steel structure, stone walls and metal roofing were used for low-maintenance living. The property also includes a new barn and pool house as well as a raised vegetable garden, patio, play areas, and a pathway traversing along the edge of the tall prairie grass.

What We Love: This rustic modern home creates a breathtaking visual juxtaposition between the sprawling prairie that the home is nestled on, and clean long lines marked by strong modern design. Massive walls of glass floods natural light into living spaces, while exterior exposed steel, stone and metal materials are also utilized in the home’s interior, providing continuity of the peaceful environment of the outdoors.
