This stunning family vacation cabin is perched on the shores of beautiful Lake Okanagan, in Naramata, British Columbia, Canada, imagined by interior designer Robert Bailey. This summer retreat is quite literally a family’s dream-come-true! The design was inspired by sketches presented by the client as well as the surrounding landscape. The lakeside project was designed from the ground up, working with an architectural designer to bring the vision to life. Designed for an active family, everything in the home had to be both low-maintenance, with nothing that is too fragile. The home would be their summertime residence and since it is positioned on a lake, it needed to accommodate those who enjoy summer activities such as running, swimming, biking and kayaking. Materials and fabrics needed to hold up to those coming in with damp clothing and sandy fee. The residence also needed to have flexible entertaining and sleeping space so that the family could host visiting friends and family. The design team planned an open concept layout in order to accommodate the free flow of people and activities.
The home was basically designed with the concept of being a cabin yet with all the modern amenities. Planks of distressed French oak were applied to both the floor and ceiling, offering a comfortable aesthetic that is very durable. The design team sourced furnishings that would afford a luxurious comfort that offers more a collected look rather than designed.
The goal of this project was to create a seamless connection between indoors and out, a common theme element in most new and remodeled houses today. The walls seem to just disappear as you meander out onto the terraced property. The outdoor living spaces feature a fire bowl surrounded by lounge chairs covered with weather-resistant fabrics. Carefully placed outdoor light fixtures and audio-visual controls are extended out to the property’s perimeter. The finished result is a residence that has been built to last for many generations.
What We Love: This home offers an overall design aesthetic that is modern, comfortable yet very rugged and durable at the same time. It offers flexible living spaces both indoors and out and is unpretentious with a defined purpose for summertime enjoyment.
